A 33 year old man, Paul Makushak, emerges after ten years of voluntary isolation in a tiny cubicle behind a wall in a Greenpoint brownstone. He longs to return to the tomb like space where his mother sealed him off in 1939 at the outbreak of war. Police take him to a hospital as he recounts a strange tale of lifelong seclusion.
Bnai Brith sponsors an I am American Day contest for Indiana High School students. James Levine and Saul Waxler announce prizes including a Bulova Excellency wrist watch first prize, a Zenith radio second prize, a gold pen set third prize, and wallets for fourth and fifth. Entries are displayed at the high school. English faculty screen entries before a judge panel featuring Dr. Rhodes Stabley and Dr. Harry Burton Boyd.
The Youth Legion of Alverda is terminated after about a year of activities including outings and basketball leagues. About $100 in the treasury is donated to Father Flanagan's Boystown, Nebraska. Public indifference cited in the dissolution resolution.
The murder case against Ray Timblin of Rossiter is continued to the August term of Jefferson County Criminal Court. Timblin, 40, faces charges for his wife’s February 1947 death, originally listed as death by her own action. Attention-Peeler Bible Class Dinner April 29 postponed until later date.

A Rayne Township farm home near Ernest Indiana County was destroyed by a midday fire. Firemen fought the large frame house blaze with limited water supplies, while three outbuildings burned. Indiana Borough schools mark the Twenty-sixth National and Inter-American Music Week with a May 4 concert at 7:30 p m in the Indiana High School Auditorium. Participating are Indiana High School, Thaddeus Stevens, Horace Mann, and John Keith laboratories with joint directorship from Dr Ganfield Miss Beeler and Miss Borge Mr Burggraf. Five groups include All-City Elementary Orchestra and Chorus All-City High School Orchestra Chorus and Band. The event aims to unite musical students for a city festival and future annual concerts.
County Guards from Indiana Company F and Blairsville Company L of the 110th Infantry, 28th Division, Pennsylvania National Guards, will join a testimonial parade in Washington, Pennsylvania on Saturday at 3 00 P M to honor regimental commanders. The event follows with Arthur Godfrey at 8 00 and wrestling at 9 30 P M with range screen TV at Meadowbrook theater.
John L. Lewis and top soft coal operators held rival strategy meetings in Washington on April 27 as 1949 contract talks approach. Lewis 200-man policy committee met while union leaders conferred privately, and a dozen key operators discussed policy with Ezra Van Horn. Some operators said they would resist any wage hikes amid shrinking markets and competition with other fuels, while Moody of the Southern Coal Producers Association urged early contract talks and termination of old agreements as of June.
Six fire trucks responded to an alarm near St Francis College yesterday. Ebensburg sent four engines and Cresson sent two. The minor blaze was quickly extinguished and caused no serious damage.
Washington April 27 AP Republican senators pressed for a detailed inquiry into Secretary of the Navy Sullivan's resignation. He quit after blasting Secretary Johnson for halting construction of the USS United States to be the world’s largest carrier. Senate leaders signaled a possible airing, with divisions among Democrats and Republicans over the need for further testimony.
Mrs. Hazel Grinde, 56, wealthy widow, was found dead in a blood spattered bathroom with six stab wounds to the neck. Police say a pair of scissors nearby were used and call the death a murder. Her daughter Alice, 27, found the body and summoned help after returning from a visit. Her death follows a previous case last November involving widow Mrs. Mary Wicks.

Dayton April 27 The Air Force is studying flying saucer reports, citing 240 domestic and foreign sightings from Wright Field. Intelligence notes 30 percent are weather or balloon debris, 40 percent remain mysterious, with no nation proving superior tech to the United States.
Secretary of State Acheson asked Congress to back the North Atlantic Treaty and the $1.45 billion foreign military aid program to strengthen world security. He testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, saying both measures are necessary and aligned in promoting global security.
A wall collapsed today as about 20 workers built a sewer tunnel 48 feet underground in Chicago. A bill sent to Gov. James H. Duff proposes allowing school boards to retire teachers at will once they reach age 42. Current law sets a retirement age range between 62 and 78. The measure aims to give boards authority to retire teachers younger than standard retirement ages.
