Johnstown Social Security office posted new records for the first quarter of 1955 with 1453 applications filed and 1230 processed for payments. Manager Richard C. Wiestling noted expansion under last year’s liberalized law, detailing new earning provisions and urging potential beneficiaries to apply promptly.
Sixty Rotary Club members with ten wives joined a spring cleanup in East Los Angeles. They swept ten miles of streets and alleys, loading away more than twenty truckloads of trash, papers and weeds. The volunteers used shovels and brooms to restore the area.
Washington letter details Jane Eads Chatham, wife of Rep Thurmond Chatham, a Georgetown host and former Young Democrats leader. It notes Prospect House as their residence, its redecorating, and the couple's family and background within Washington society.
The master bedroom and adjoining study once used by Forrestal are depicted in rich blues and ivory. Mrs. Chatham, fond of music, played the violin and wrote the song Lonely Road a sad ballad type. A local orchestra leader helped copyright it and performs it for Washington audiences.

A northern Alabama tornado killed five in Piney Grove and Cedar Plains area, injuring 25 and causing extensive property loss. A Virginia windstorm unroofed a dorm at Eastern State College with no casualties. Scattered western showers and snow flurries stretched from Seattle to the northern Rockies.

Also named are William Mahon Tomlinson a 37 year old U.S. Treasury official to France, Dr Francis Scott McBride 82 retired minister and Anti-Saloon League official, William H. Carter 91 former U.S. representative and underwear firm head, Bishop William A. Fountain 84 senior AME bishop emeritus, Rev John B. Affleck 65 supreme chancellor of Catholic Anchor Clubs, Walter Seymour Allward 78 famed Canadian sculptor of the Vimy Ridge WWI memorial who died yesterday.
The Hoover Commission concludes that U S military base meals do not meet commercial catering standards. It notes the armed forces source good quality food but err in preparation and service, failing to match restaurant quality.
Secretary Benson departs for a three day tour of the Great Plains dust bowl region to study wind erosion and shape a program to combat it. He aims to review farms, weather, and conservation efforts with local officials and farmers.
A 40-year-old man, Gustavo Diaz Gonzales, was arrested in Puerto Rico for the knife slayings of a Brooklyn couple and their two-year-old son. He admitted killing Mrs Rosa Grancitano but denied the other two deaths, claiming a separate killer acted after an argument. The crime occurred at the Grancitano residence and the evidence included a refrigerator disposal of Peter Grancitano. The case ties to a motive of robbery and involved the suspect traveling from a densely populated area. Police held Gonzales without bond.
