Roller coaster pioneer Joe McKee recalls decades of thrill rides
NEW YORK AP. At 67 Joe McKee is seen as the dean of roller coasters. He recalls the first coaster built in Pittsburgh in 1904 and his start as a carpenter. McKee estimates involvement in about 300 rides, notes few have designing roles, and says coasters evolved from a simple figure eight. He credits parks in Palisades NJ and Cincinnati meetings with his wife Maggie, and argues coasters remain central as parks grow and land costs rise.
