In Pittsburgh on April 20 federal and county courts moved to speed suits affecting the 50 million gateway center project. Judge A Marshall Thompson considered an injunction to halt property seizure. A three judge federal panel will hear constitutional challenge next Tuesday. Judge Sara M Soffel approved condem nation bonds giving urban redevelopment authority title to ten more properties at the allegheny and monongahela confluence as the center nears completion.
Mrs Rose Palermo of Pittsburgh asks a court to enjoin three men from selling items bought with part of $10000 stolen from her three months earlier. The Prothonotary's office notes it is the first suit of its kind here. Palermo, robbed at her Greentree home, targets Lewis Neth William J Faust and Joseph Marsili. The trio signed statements admitting the robbery. A major crime was committed in the U S every 18 seconds in 1949.
In Braddock a couple in a borrowed car were cleared of blame in the February death of 2 year old Matthew Gordano. A coroner jury ruled the boy’s death an accident and absolved Francis and Margaret Rutter. The mother Mrs Gozdanovich cried out in grief as the verdict was announced.
Vatican City April 20 Pope Pius held a private audience with Adam Stefan Cardinal Sapieha Archbishop of Krakow lasting nearly an hour. Vatican sources say the topic likely the Polish church state relations amid rumors of a regime accord. The Cardinal denied knowledge of any such accord.
Dr Willis H Bell of the State Teachers College will chair the University of Chicago Alumni Foundation campaign for the 1950 alumni gift. Chester W Laing announced the effort which operates in 445 cities including Honolulu and Puerto Rico aiming to raise 150000 to reach over 300000 with bequests. The largest bequest is 700000 for Murphy scholarships from the late Mrs Murphy. The gift will be presented to President Ernest Cadman Colwell on alumni day June 10. The campaign notes 50 000 alumni have donated over two million since 1941.
Hazel Scott, famed pianist and wife of Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr., won a $250 damages verdict from a Pasco restaurant after an all-white jury found she was refused service on February 11, 1949 due to race. The case, brought under Washington's 1909 Civil Rights Law, contrasted with her prior demand for $50,000.
