President Johnson warned editors that a railroad strike could cripple the economy by halting production and threaten health as vital supplies stop moving. With a voluntary settlement deadline looming and a Monday potential resolve, he noted Congress could be invoked for emergency action if talks fail.
An ARAMCO spokesman identified U S citizens and dependents among passengers in Dhahran with an American oil company colony. Belgium faced a stiff clash as doctors and dentists protested a new health plan amid fears of overcrowding and lost income. A three month delay preceded a mass strike on April 1, with 10,000 doctors and 2,000 dentists walking out during Easter. The government mobilized reserves, emergency hospital service formed, but the system neared collapse as hospitals and nurses near exhaustion.

In Saigon today Secretary of State Rusk toured with Lodge and Nouyen Xuan Oanh amid threats after Viet Cong bombings. A grenade struck a military bus near Saigon. security was tightened around foreign ministry and Rusk's party. Goldwater urged harsher actions against Laos and North Vietnam, including possible blockades and intensified defense.
Security agents offered no link between the bombing and Rusk’s Saigon trip, part of a broader May visit clocking a tense security climate. Police had detained two suspected Viet Cong agents and six grenades around McNamara’s prior Vietnam tour. Ambassador Lodge faced assassination threats and tight guards as Rusk met with Lodge and General Harkins during the Saigon stop.
Dick Blanchfield, a 24 year old New Yorker, will join the Tom Dooley Foundation hospital in Khong Laos as a versatile aide. He sought the post after learning of Dooley's Asia work, wrote to Dr Verne E Chaney, and traveled from West Point to San Francisco to interview.
A blaze hit an integrated high school sparking a response from Tuskegee and Tallassee fire teams. Only the high school wing burned while white pupils boycotted classes after desegregation, with many transferring to a private Tuskegee school. Potential reassignment to nearby Shorter High School is discussed.

Unseasonably mild temperatures in the 60s and 70s spread from eastern Texas and Oklahoma through the Ohio Valley to western New York. Showers appeared in the lower Mississippi Valley Maine Florida Keys and central Rockies but generally remained light with little rainfall.
