Truman to greet DAR delegates in Washington DC

Delegates from the Daughters of the American Revolution gather in Washington for the 59th Continental Congress. President Truman will issue a welcoming message to about 4 000 delegates and 2 000 alternates while officers vie for leadership. Indiana figures include Mrs. Roscoe O Byrne of Brookville and others as campaigns unfold.

Plastic heart valves tested on dogs offer hope for humans

Albany doctors described plastic heart valves tested in about 30 dogs, with five alive after six months. The tiny one piece devices sew into the heart and open with muscle movement, potentially replacing damaged valves in humans within two years, supported by National Heart Institute grants.

Dead Snakes Mystery Is Cleared Up

In Troy North Carolina on April 18 locals learned the snakes found hanging from trees were impaled by shrikes. Biology professor A D Shaftesbury and other scientists confirmed the loggerhead shrike snaps prey and impales it on thorns or barbed wire. The phenomenon drew curious crowds across the state.

Speakers For C E Convention In Indiana County

The Indiana County Christian Endeavor Union will hold its annual convention at Ernest Union Church on Thursday April 20. A banquet begins at 630 PM with Rev Lester Case of Harrisburg as toastmaster and song leader. Rev Howard Tucker of Dubois headlines the evening program at 4 PM. The theme is God Designs Youth Builds and will run through all sessions. Local officers include Paul Bestford Dorothy Armstrong Jessie Mae Beatty Mae Extrem Jim Kangur Clair Armstrong and Marie Rhodes. Rev D Earl Turner is Pastor Counselor. An invitation is extended to young people to attend both banquet and evening session.

Fence Bid Approved for 1657 Feet Around Recreation Field

The board approved Pittsburgh Steel Company for 4736.00 to place and erect 1657 feet of steel fence around the new North Indiana recreation field. The project, part of the high school recreation area, must be completed by June 15 and reflects a budget increase largely allocated to the tax collector, with no salary changes for the superintendent or clerks.

Soviet Protest Over Downed Navy Plane Sparks Tense Exchange

Foreign Minister Andrei Vistinsky said the Soviet Union fired on an unarmed American Navy plane over open Baltic waters after it ignored orders to land. Clymer Kiwanis met at the Presbyterian Church with 41 members. Blair Goodlin led the meeting. Norman Richardson reported the Indiana Boy Scout Appreciation Dinner. Bert Levison chaired the program and introduced Robert Steele of Indiana who presented color Korea slides and Korean notes. Next meeting set for Clymer location.
