Mob Hangs 5YearOld Suspect After Jail Raid in Kansas
In KiN5 April 18 an enraged mob of 1600 seized Richard Read from a jail cell in Atwood and hanged him from a tree near the site where Dorothy Hunter, 8, was killed. Deputies were forced to surrender keys as a wall was breached and Read was taken away in automobiles. The body remained hanging as coroner Dr. Charles E. Hennenberger arrived at daybreak to take custody amid an ongoing investigation. The governor, in town for taxes remarks, did not speak but urged a full inquiry to identify mob leaders. The lynching occurred after a prior discovery of Hunter’s body in a haystack near Achilles last Saturday.

Beulah Muir, 12, perished in a Blairsville area farmhouse fire that burned the Muir home in Burrill township. Her remains were recovered and prepared for private burial on the farm. Funeral services were set for 2 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Jones in Smith Station, with Rev. W. J. Miller officiating. The coroner ruled accidental burns after investigating Saturday.

A frame house on North Water Street Blairsville occupied by Mrs. Kate Stump was slightly damaged by fire late yesterday morning. Blairsville firemen answered an 11:45 a.m. alarm and found the blaze extinguished by a bucket brigade organized by neighbors. The fire was attributed to a defective flue.

Adena Ohio April 18 Three pickets were shot down as Ohio National Guardsmen halted an attack of strike sympathizers at the Somers mine of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
