Ernest Alf witnessed the blaze and described the shock and flames from his home nearby.
Swirling downstream water from the Mississippi inundates the St Paul lowlands with millions in damage. Gov. Anderson warns of a major disaster as the river crest nears 22.5 feet, with 34 blocks flooded and 5,000 people displaced from 1,500 dwellings.

The unit previously served a federal tour and left Bremerhaven for embarkation around the Darby’s departure. A spokesman noted it is unlikely any 28th men are aboard the ship at this time.
