Spillway opens to divert flood waters from river to lake
In New Orleans, Bonnet Carre Spillway began releasing Mississippi River water into Lake Pontchartrain to relieve pressure on levees. Army officials said additional floodways could be opened if needed. About 4,000 watched as Sen. Russell Long opened the spillway sections. all sections expected to be open by Wednesday, diverting up to about a sixth of the river’s flow.

Auto Plunges From Wharf in Pittsburgh Tragedy
In downtown Pittsburgh a car plunged off a wharf into the Allegheny River. One man drowned and police searched for a second victim. The car was recovered near the 6th Street Bridge hours after the accident. The driver was identified as James T. Smith, 43, of the city.

Barr Slope Blast and Fire Destroys Home in Barr Slope
An explosion and ensuing fire destroyed Clyde Wise's home in Barr Slope on Saturday. No one was inside. Wise's wife heard the blast and flames spread before firefighters could control the blaze. The cause is not yet determined, but a leaky gas stove is suspected. The Wise family lost possessions with partial insurance. Commodore firemen assisted Clymer units. a Wise daughter fainted at the scene and received medical care.

Shapp to push tax cuts but budget size limits them
Gov. Shapp plans to introduce legislation in the Senate this week to cut personal income tax from 2.3 to 2.1 percent and the corporate net income tax from 11 to 10 percent, with the final size depending on the approved state budget. Senate Republicans say larger cuts may come by trimming the $3.8 billion budget, while a separate bill would limit school construction costs via referendums. The General Assembly is also weighing a capital budget for highways and a bill to abolish the Commonwealth Compensation Commission as hearings on the budget proceed. Slain FBI Agent Honored Posthumously
Gregory Spinelli of Indiana was honored posthumously by the American Federation of Police which awarded his widow the Police Medal of Honor for justice and law. Spinelli was killed in a Charlotte shoot-out on March 15. A memorial fund was announced to be run with the University of Pennsylvania, Spinelli’s 1970 alma mater.
