Death of Dean of Congress Morris Sheppard
Senator Morris Sheppard of Texas, dean of Congress and sponsor of the National Prohibition Amendment, died this morning after weeks of overwork. He completed 38 years in Congress, serving in the House since 1902 and in the Senate since 1913. Dr. George Calver cited a slow decline in brain function as the cause. He chaired the Foreign Affairs Committee and guided defense related legislation including the Selective Service Act. Senator Ellison D Smith of South Carolina ranks as Senate dean but had no House service. Continued on Page Five.

Dr. Frederick Leslie Benton, 66, a Washington physician and student of Spanish history, was found shot to death in his home last night. Two friends discovered the body hours after Benton had been discharged from a naval hospital where he had been treated for nervousness. The pistol lay on the floor.
