Illinois voters head to the polls in the major primary with Taft Stassen and Eisenhower write in. Officials expect near two million participants, the largest Illinois turnout in a decade, as polls open early and close at 5 p.m. SCT. The 1936 record stands at 2,674,713. Four candidates who won four promo primaries this year share attention.
Indiana County voters will see a tax rise as the 1952 budget, adopted by the county commissioners, increases the tax rate from eight to ten mills. The split funds include two mills for general, two for the institution fund, and two for sinking. General expenditures sum to 334,772.45 with income estimated at 342,310, while institutions and sinking fund allocations total 173,145 and 189,150 respectively. The commissioners also voted to borrow 45,000 for operations pending tax receipts. The session also noted anticipated changes in property taxation under a new state law and the need for a chief tax assessor and engineering staff.
Tuesday in Indiana County sportsmen were urged to aid game protectors in enforcing game laws. John George Bachofer, 38, a retired finance executive and prominent Pennsylvania Masonic figure, died in Reading after collapsing in a car with his daughter Mrs Maybel Rader. He was to be installed as grand commander at the Knights Templar state convention in Philadelphia next month. He died at Community General Hospital on arrival.

The 28th Infantry Division announced about 700 troops, largely from Pennsylvania, are en route to embarkation ports in Germany for return home. Maj. Gen. Daniel B. Strickler said thousands will depart over the next month to be separated from the service. Sgt. Curtis Simmon of the Philadelphia Phillies is among the first to leave by plane. The unit arrived in Germany November 21, 1951. Names not released and departure dates undisclosed.
Federal Judge James P McGranery has given former Ardmore Pa postmaster William J Carey a suspended six month sentence for stealing from the mails. Carey 44 admitted taking 15 packages according to postal agents.
The midn ight steel strike spreads to Indiana County with Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Co Kent mines down to one or two days a week starting immediately. Other R and P mines on short schedules while Lucerne mine idle today set to resume tomorrow. A P spokesman warns railroad traffic and utilities will thin out as coal industry slows.
State College Penn State students reportedly broke into coed dormitories and tossed lingerie from upstairs windows in a campus riot described as spring fever by Frank Simes chief resident counsellor. Water was poured on the roving frosh as they charged doors and fire escapes, with more than two thousand spectators. Pittsburgh AP dispatch says Ernest T. Weir accuses administration and labor leaders of a hidden deal as a nationwide steel strike nears. The Wage Stabilization Board backed a 17 cent raise for CIO United Steelworkers, with the Commerce Department ready to seize control if Truman orders it. About 100000 workers already idled as plants wind down. The Lone Star Steel plant in Texas reports 900 of 1200 workers quit at midnight.
Washington officials said the Commerce Department is prepared to run the steel industry if President Truman orders seizure amid the wage dispute with the CIO Steelworkers Union. A spokesman noted draft seizure orders exist, though no decision to seize had been made, with Sawyer recalled from the Midwest to advise on policy.
Communist negotiators signaled willingness to accept a neutral supervising role for Russia in a Korean truce if Allies allow Reds to repair airfields. Maj. Gen.
