President Roosevelt plans to appoint a small central board to help spend the 4.88 billion dollar work relief program. Officials say a three or four member panel will aid him while he retains purse strings control. About 486 million will fund relief and CCC maintenance through July 3.
In Harrisburg the Democratic House and Republican Senate near the fifteenth week of session clash over Gov. George H. Earle's 203 million tax program. The governor insists on his plan and a strong substitute is awaited by leaders while Washington relief funds threaten an end if Pennsylvania cannot pledge five million dollars monthly. Senate Finance Chairman Sen. John J. McClure presided over talks as leaders warned of a looming relief crisis with six legislative days left.
Elders Ridge Presbyterian church has deeded the residence and store building to Rev and Mrs Jas R Craighead. The home will house Frank Ewing's family and the store will serve as a community center. Repairs are underway and a house-warming is set for Friday evening April 26 with a program for spring and summer activities.
Approximately 40 butcher shops closed as housewives strike to protest meat prices. Housewives have picketed for weeks urging customers to stop buying meat until prices fall. Watch for vital interest notice to car owners on April 10.
In Danzig on April 8, the Volkstag election left the Free City with 60 percent of seats for the ruling party, seven points short of a majority to change the constitution. The vote drew four Nazi leaders to speak and drew charges of intimidation. Observers say the result boosts the city’s liberty and delays any return to the Reich.
Joseph Bogan 23 and Eugene Marino 23, both of South Blairsville, allegedly threatened Mike Mistrick 23, of South Blairsville, an employee of Columbia Plate Glass. Mistrick defended himself, resulting in stabbings. Bogan remained in serious condition at Indiana Hospital, while Marino suffered head and arm injuries. Pearl Deselle and Steve Massimino were arrested for surety of the peace, posting bonds.
Ray Good of East Church street Indiana won a door prize radio at the R. & S. Motor Co auto show. The event drew twenty five hundred visitors who enjoyed music by Norm Park and his Collegians. The Gazette was the sole advertising medium cited by the firm for the show and display.
Warren Delano Robbins, 49, first cousin to President Roosevelt and U S Minister to Canada, died after a weeklong illness at Doctor's Hospital New York. Funeral services planned for tomorrow, Robbins long served the State Department as a leading authority on diplomatic procedure.
Deputy Coroner John Artz found 5830 in cash and a bankbook totaling over 6000 hidden in the shoe of Wasyl Panchak, an unemployed steel worker who died Saturday. The money, intended for his wife Anastasia who may be unreachable, was left behind after he reportedly sent her from Russia twenty five years ago.
Thirty four men connected with miners received certificates at the Clymer high school auditorium. H B Northrup praised the course and urged repeating it at State College on Miners Day. Speakers included T McCarthy George Steinhauser and Norman Davis with discussions on mining geology chemistry and the value of education.
The Montgomery Ward mail order house faces a Supreme Court challenge to the NRA retail code authority in a dispute over pro rata budget assessments. After refusing to pay for over a year and declining correspondence, the firm lost its Blue Eagle. NRA officials say the company’s size justified making this a test case to enforce code expenses.
State police search Dr. H. B. Zimmerly's Mechanics Grove farm for clues to Mrs. Gladys Lawson's fate after an operation. A 67-year-old handyman Richard Parker, under narcotics influence, reports a knife used in the alleged murder. Curious onlookers swarm the property as officials process bone fragments and ashes found near the garage.
State relief figures show a slight uptick for the week ending March 30 with 14,901 applications and 458,523 cases distributed among 1,738,410 persons. Total expenditures reach 3,668,757.53, including 22,240.50 in direct relief and 1,443.95 in work relief.
Arthur Hollman, 34, of Sagamore, was seriously injured Friday entering the B and S mine. He was caught between a shift block and a car, tearing flesh from the right leg. Surgeons at Adrian hospital, Punxsutawney, operated for over an hour and may have to amputate below the knee, with doctors doubtful of saving the limb.

More than 30 fatalities are reported as tornadoes lash Mississippi Louisiana Texas Florida and Alabama. About 2060 people are homeless, with Gloster and nearby communities hardest hit. Destruction includes damaged water and power facilities, with dozens injured and ongoing rescue efforts. Authorities fear the death toll will rise as debris searches continue.
