Professor H. G. Lord of Columbia argues gambling is not inherently bad and can be a harmless recreation when properly conducted. He contends gambling as a business is the real danger and compares it to other leisure activities.
A historical remark traces life on Earth from fishes to amphibians to reptiles, then mammals, and finally birds. The author argues each class rose to peak specialization before waning and predicts birds will, in time, become the dominant inhabitants, leaving humankind near its peak development.

Mortia M Wilson leaves tomorrow for York to join a US geological survey party as rodman. W O Bennett and Fred Dilta of Owne registered at the Colonial hotel in Pittsburg. E M Weat guest at Hotel Henry. Annie Lowry of Pittsburg hosts lunch for Grace Wavia Mercer at the Duquesne Club with a matinee at the Alvin Theatre. Mr and Mrs W H Kennedy move to Indiana to lead pastoral work of the Wesleyan Methodist Church on West Mhawh Street. Rev Kennedy to preach first sermons there tomorrow. Services both morning and evening.

Mr and Mrs M A Brown visited here and Worthville. W B Wardall, Altoona post office inspector, was in town. A cow owned by W C Brown died. Dr J W Morrow has a contract to build about 20 miles of telephone line for Grace Bros. R H Knox breaks ground for a new home near town. Misses Efe Neal and Winona Latter closed school terms. William Homan and son John left for Elenora to work at a sawmill. Edward Moot went to DuBois seeking summer work.
Samuel F. Byers thanks American Assurance Co of Philadelphia for prompt settlement of his claim. He reports a check for 11.14 received from district manager A B King of Indiana Pa, and says he will recommend the company to friends and assist wherever possible.
Washington authorities appoint Josephine Dodson post mistress at Amicksburg succeeding the late Homer Dodson. Henry H. Steving advertises price putting in bia ad amid unclear wording.
Justice John M. Harlan of the U S Supreme Court has launched a campaign to establish a Presbyterian cathedral in the capital. He has sent identical letters to leading Presbyterian ministers across the United States inviting their counsel and support, arguing twenty seven years in Washington justify a national church representative in the capital.
Newark April 8 Bishop Joseph F Berry of Buffalo urged Methodist ministers to limit talks with women and conduct calls in the evening when families are together. He warned that noon calls to isolated women are improper and that betraying trust makes one a scoundrel. In Michigan Lansing April 8 Secretary Shumway reports a cerebrospinal meningitis outbreak in Star township Antrim county with eight cases and seven deaths.
