Dramatic rescue ends miners’ 17 hour cave in ordeal
In Carbondale two miners Steve Daynock and Michael Hurchick were rescued after 17 hours trapped 3 feet underground in a sub-leased northwest colliery. John Parish alerted workers when the cave in occurred just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday night. A 30-foot earth wall was breached with a steam shovel and ambulances arriving as crowds of up to 5,000 gathered. The miners tapped out at 8:38 p.m. and were brought to the surface at dawn yesterday, ending the tense rescue.
