Death of Milton Hoffman Veteran Civil War Resident
Milton Hoffman, last Civil War veteran in his county area, died March 20 at about 1 PM at age 88 years 11 months 11 days from a paralytic stroke amid a illness. Born in Germany on January 9 1843 he came to the United States with his mother and stepfather later living in Somerset and Cambria counties. He served in Company H forty fourth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, fought at Bull Run and Bunker Hill, carried a bullet in his leg until death, married Lucinda Hill, worked at Red Mill 35 years, then bought David Altimus farm before moving to Strongstown. Survived by widow Hucinad Hoffman four sons Thomas John Hoffman of Wintondale Charles Hoffman and Milton Hieliman of Reisant, daughter Anna Mary Miller of Ivison, and 28 grandchildren 26 great grandchildren. Six children predeceased him. Services held March 28 at Strongstown Methodist Episcopal Church led by Rev. C H White.
