About 400 miners trapped after a fire in the St Paul mine with 12 bodies recovered. Rescue teams descended 360 feet, bringing a cautious ray of hope as experts report extinguishing the fire and search efforts continue for survivors.
The mail steamer La Seyne sinks within two minutes after a collision with the Onda near Singapore. Ninety six people die including Baron and Baroness Benick y, officers, and crew. Rescue of 61, aided by sharks, is a dramatic effort as the Onfa ferries survivors to port.
A fire at 425 Water Street near Cherry alley in Pittsburg killed three and left six others seriously injured. The building, a lodging house run by Frank Muller, was destroyed along with surrounding structures. Survivors fled through windows and the rear alley in a frantic escape. Firefighters could not identify the three deceased. All injured were rushed to Humeolithia hospital.
Eudora Kansas reports the capture and death of 17 year old William Bullock of Lawrence tied to a bank robbery at Eudora State Bank. He allegedly shot Ired Starr during the hold up and wounded himself as armed citizens closed in. Police say the assailant died after the confrontation.
Albany reports mayor elect William J. Gaynor filed a statement with the secretary of state declaring he did not spend any money in aid of his election. The filing emphasizes a lack of campaign spending by the incoming New York City mayor.
A New York statement from Avert H Harris vice president of the New York Central lines says the loss from alleged defalcations by J Warriner, the Big Fours local treasurer at Chichteatt, will total about 500000.
Fourteen killed or hurt when a runaway electric freight car crashed into a passenger car on the British Columbia Electric Railway interurban line near Vancouver. Seven injured, two perhaps fatally. Echmond, Virginia report on Aubrey Wilson, 19, from Nottoway county who is nearly blind in daylight but rapidly navigates in darkness. Doctors note his condition stems from excessive light exposure, calling it an albino eye. he describes night vision as sharper than day. His wife Wilson also suffers from the defect.
Belated dispatch reports a sea disaster with about 11 dead. The barkentine John Bennett, carrying coal from New York to Halifax, sank after colliding with a four masted schooner off Block Island. The Merrill C Hart, Thomaston Me, is believed lost with all hands. wreckage bearing its name drifted ashore near the scene. The Bennett was owned by A W Hendry & Son of Liverpool Nova Scotia.
Washington report from John L. Griffiths consul general in London says British labor conditions worsen with lower wages and shorter hours. In 1909 full year wage cuts affected 464,000 workers, while the first half of 1909 saw 1,081,273 earning reductions. London saw 2,500 more job applicants than the same period in 1908.
Notices posted at the Dunbar Furnace works announce a 10 cent daily wage increase effective December 1 1909 for all day labor at the Dunbar furnace Semet Solvay coke ovens Dunbar sand mill and New Haven and Dunbar railroad employees with common labor at 1450 and others at 1500 per day The raise affects nearly 1000 workers.
The Youngstown & Lake Vale Railroad will be turned over to the New York Central lines within weeks. The line will provide a four track ore feeder from Pittsburg to Lorahy and Cleveland and will serve lake boats.

In War Road Minnesota the Jensen family perished in a house fire three miles south of town. Nels Jensen and his wife and five children died or were fatally burned after a grocery clerk mistakenly delivered gasoline for kerosene used to start the blaze. An explosion followed the ignition of the liquid.
Mrs U S Grant wife of a son of President Grant died in San Diego California at age 63 after years of invalidism. She is survived by her husband and five children including Mrs U S Macey Chaffey Grant U S Grant IV Julian Dent Firant and Fannie Grant. She was a daughter of former United States Senator Chaffe of Colorado.
In North Dakota, Thompson of Cando is named United States senator by Governor Burke to fill the unexpired term of Senator M. N. Johnson who died three weeks earlier. The appointment follows the late senator’s passing and is tied to the succession process in Bismarck under state authority.
In South Bend Indiana the body of Clarence Mac Dowell a watchmaker from Elgin was found in the St Joseph river with a crushed skull. He had disappeared about a month earlier and is believed to have been murdered.
Demands for a 12 percent wage increase and uniform schedules are to be made by conductors and trainmen on every railroad system east of Chicago. The wage rise would involve 125,000 workers. Switchmen and yardmen in Chicago under the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen have raised the campaign. Trainmen on 18 Chicago-area railroads have already served notice demanding a 5 cent hourly raise.
