Grade Crossings Have To Go On Busy Rail Routes
Statistics from the Pennsylvania Railroad show since January 1, 1902 the company removed 568 grade crossings on the busy New York to Washington and Philadelphia to Pittsburgh routes. There are 426 crossings left, mostly on unfrequented roads, spanning 87 miles. The Washington terminal completion completes President Cassett’s plan to remove grade crossings in major cities between New York and Washington. Elevations and depressions of tracks occurred in Jersey City, Newark, Elizabeth, New Brunswick, Trenton, Philadelphia, Chester, Wilmington, Baltimore, and Washington. On the Pittsburg division 44 crossings have been eliminated, leaving 52 on the main passenger lines between Altoona and Pittsburgh. Of 10 grade crossings on the main line between Altoona and Harrisburg on January 1, 1962, only 2 remained on the first day of this year.
