In Indiana County, editorials stir passions over liquor policy and Judge Telford. The Gazette Times reports license decisions, remonstrances, and a county political shift with reform rhetoric affecting breweries, hotels, and local elections. The Indian Brewery license is refused while rehearings grant others, amid public debate on reform and public morality.
Election news from Punxsutawney shows strong showings for F B Hastings for burgess and S N D Corey for justice of the peace. Pp O Frens carried four wards while Hastings won two. N D Corey, amid party strife, secured 238 votes to the road with H H McHenry bagging 676 for treasurer. Lockard won tax collector by 322, Crosby led auditor by 315. Brookville saw Harry McMurray defeat Thos V Henlincks by 30 for burgess. Kittanning’s Democratic ticket won.
Thieves smashed the Isadore Miller storeroom window on Monday morning at Filacklick c and seized a pair of shoes and some catching. Miller was awakened by the crash and reached the scene in time to stop entry, but the culprits fled after taking what they could. Later that night thieves robbed the Blacklick Inn at Webrum, run by C. G. Brixner, taking the entire stock of cigars from the showcase. No clues were found in either case.
Indiana residents may hear renowned sculptor Lorado Taft speak at the Normal Chapel on Friday. Taft is noted for his sculpting skill and engaging illustrated lectures, offered as a chance to study art and the craft of captivating an audience firsthand.
Dr Wedderspoon of Pittsburg Pa will lecture on the Methodist church Thursday evening February 25 at 4 o clock. His subject Real Aristocracy. He is praised as a graceful speaker on the lecture platform in this country. All are invited to attend and hear him. Admission 24 seats.
The Senior reception at the Normal school Saturday evening was a complete success. The recreation hall was beautifully decorated with class colors black and white and music was provided by Kettering's piano. Many friends and relatives from out of town attended. The Reynoldsville Herald, formerly Falls Creek Herald, will return to Falls Creek after a short run in Reynoldsville.
Mr and Mrs Mimer Manners of the National Flotel entertained about twenty women friends on Monday evening February 15 in honor of Misses Margaret and Florence Washington who will remove to Dubois. The evening was spent in game ponies. Refreshments were served.
W Scott Fitzgerald of Georgevills and Cora B Hazlett of Smiteks burg were married here on February 16 at the Lutheran parsonage on South Sixth Street by Rev. Lewis Hay. Subscribe for the Democrat.
A 23 year old miner, under the influence of alcohol, shot and killed Glen Johnston, 10, near Rossiter after a confrontation with Mrs. Lutcy Johnston and her son. The assailant, Williams, fled to Chambersville then Johnstown before surrendering to Indiana County authorities. Local residents fear further violence as police pursue Williams and a second shot remains unaccounted for.
Frank Layton, of this place, lies at the point of death after a 32 caliber revolver discharged at the Lower home on Sunday evening about 6 o'clock. Nine bullet punctures required immediate surgery. a ten inch bowel segment was removed. An additional operation will follow when conditions permit. Layton absolves Miss Lower of responsibility and takes the blame on himself.
Bruno Carbone and Joe Veltra, condemned for the murder of Robert Tozier near Glen Campbell last July, were visited Sunday by a brother from Hooversville Somerset County and Frank Veltra who was jailed as an accessory. A priest visits them often and prays with them as they await possible Supreme Court action.
The dedication program for the new Second Ward School proceeded as planned with addresses by the listed speakers offering historical insight and fresh school subjects. The fifth page contains Hon. John P. Elkin’s address and the pupil musical numbers closed with America. Treated by Trey T. F. P. Kins. Dr. Waller was absent.
Mrs and Mrs Scott Manners of East Church celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary Saturday. Friends joined with well filled baskets, sharing an evening of conversation and games before guests dispersed with best wishes for many more years of married life.
Doctors G E Simpson and H B Neal announce the creation of a new hospital on the corner of Church and Ninth Streets to care for medical and surgical patients. It will open by April, with regular graduate nurses and admission to any practicing physician. A committee from the General Hospital and leading citizens back the project. Mercy Hospital surgeons in Pittsburgh will perform major operations as needed.
Last week townspeople discussed an alleged kidnapping involving Minnie Gearhart and a county home child. My and Mrs Davis allegedly produced a forged permit to claim the child, prompting Commissioner Marshall to recover the youngster and return him to the county home. The incident remains under legal review and raises questions about accountability.
Mr. Joseph Glenn of Kittanning Pennsylvania, a leading citizen, was in Indiana late in the week on behalf of the famous K B G beer from the Kittanning Brewing Co. He stopped en route from Buffalo and kept his characteristic smile.
