A lengthy local society notice lists numerous residents and visitors in Indiana on Saturday and Sunday. Perry Walters from Punxsutawney and Prost Gordon from Normal were among those calling or visiting, with many others traveling from Morrellville Bellvue Latrobe Ebensburg and Johnstown to attend events or visit relatives.
Diptheria prompted the closure of Spangler schools last Friday. buildings were fumigated and the schools reopened Monday. About a dozen cases are reported in Barr township.
The remains of Herbert Loughry were brought to Indiana on Wednesday forenoon by John N Banks, Hsg., who accompanied the body from the White Haven sanitarium. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
A list of local deaths includes Kermit Wainwright three-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Charles Wainwright of Blairsville died at home last Tuesday with services held. Mary Murray infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Michael Murray of Rossiter died after bowel surgery in Pittston on Feb 15 and was buried in Catholic cemetery. Mrs Samuel Wishell of Livermore died Feb 19 of pneumonia with funeral at Livermore Presbyterian Church and burial in New Alexandria cemetery. Abner McConnell Civil War veteran aged 86 died at Blairsville home last Wednesday with burial in Blairsville cemetery. Henry Phipler four-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Henry Phipler of Rossiter died Feb 14 from measles and pneumonia and burial followed. Infant Robert Miler, son of Mr and Mrs C M Lowman of Wilkinsburg, died Feb 14 and burial in Galland cemetery. George McCaslin died near Vlimville Feb 14 from typhoid pneumonia contracted while nursing the Dunmire family near Atwood.
A social round up reports six young ladies hosted by Mrs. Suey H. Smith in honor of Mrs. Charles Work. Mrs. Work’s daughter Jane and Yorothy are expected with the family to Detroit next Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bryan and seven children attended church services. the clan hasn’t all met in 11 years. Various gatherings are noted: Madna Stewart hosts High School friends after a Senior basketball game. Laura Tomb entertains guests at 500 West Locust Street with elaborate refreshments. The Senior class Washington’s Birthday promenade at the Normal school drew about 175 couples on Saturday night.
A two day teachers' institute will be held at Taney school in Armstrong town on February 25 and 26. The program features speeches by Lizzie G Johnston Paul M Wood and J C White with discussions on school duties teaching methods and moral training. Sessions include knowledge useful to pupils and qualifications of a good school director and teacher with addresses by Mary Abel George and Supt. James F Chapman.
Mrs Susia Johnson of Rossiter urges Representative J N Langham of Indiana to push a settlement of the DeHaven claim against the United States. Heirs say DeHaven lent $450000 to aid Washington's army at Valley Forge, later unpaid with interest. No documentary proof remains, possibly burned in 1812. Howard DeHaven Ross wrote a history of the case.
Buel B Whitehill thanks Indiana county friends for warm welcome during his tenure in Brookville Pa in 1910. He notes unlikely chance to bid goodbye in person but hopes to meet again, expressing lasting memory of days spent in Indiana county.
Citizens of Cherrytree held a large patriotic meeting and banquet for Washington's Birthday. Notable speakers included ex-Judge Harry White and John N. Tinks, who departed for Clymer at 1 o'clock yesterday.
Selig and Jonn 1, visiting Franklin, Pennsylvania, witnessed a serious collapse. Flo was taken to a hospital where he is recovering, following the incident on Sunday.
Miss Tidna Bell Evans daughter of Harry Evans Punxsutawney wed Sergeant Lewis Lardin of State Police on Wednesday the sixth era. The Rev G W Miner officiated at First M E church Punxsutawney. The bride a longtime Punxsutawney social favorite and Allegheny College graduate. Mr Lardin previously stationed locally and well liked. Also Charles Steele Vandergrift Heights and Floy S Fairman Indiana to wed next Thursday Feb 24 at Baptist parsonage by Rev Lindstrom. Steele is son of Labana Steele Vandergrift Heights and well known here. The bride is a popular Indiana girl. Edith Daly Winfield and Howard W Huether Hastings were married Thursday afternoon last week in Altoona First Methodist Church. The couple will reside in Wehrum Fulton County.
Prof. Cogswell announces the Pittsburg Festival Orchestra will give a Spring Festival on March 28 and 20 with noted soloists possible. The program includes Handel's Messiah and Coleridge Taylor's The Death of Minnehaha. Season tickets with reserved seats go on sale March 26 for two dollars for three entertainments.
On Wednesday morning last week Judge Telford granted a license to the Indian Brewing Co and signaled he would later file an opinion on questions from the applicants attorneys about remonstrances in the proceedings. A leading attorney said the court would likely grant the remonstrance request, indicating this may be the final brewing case remonstrance heard.
Institute at Josephine hosts a full day on Saturday February 26 featuring morning Devotional Exercises and discussions on teachers out of the classroom immigration laws and education, with sessions led by Rev Warnshiuis Miss Maxwell Deets er Kinter Stuchel Householder Caulfield Rising Barron Condron and Prof Chapman. Afternoon brings roll call sentiments from Washington or Lincoln, plus topics on nature of education, Is Classical Education a Benefit, and causes of crime poverty wealth or ignorance with various recitations and announcements. The Ladies Aid Society of the Presbyterian Church elected officers for the year: President Miss Mary C McKnight secretary Mrs J M Torrence treasurer Mrs A S Wallace vice presidents Mrs O J Sayley Mrs J H Young and Mrs W Daugherty.
The Indiana Motor Co has received a carload of 1910 Buick machines. The shipment includes three different models numbered 17 10 and another. A former salteitor, now engaged in taking orders for Vanity air flour, a product from a western mill, is noted in the report.
