It contrasts oil fortunes with the fate of the six hundred, then surveys Admiral Porter’s denial of Butler’s actions at Fort Fisher, accusing him of misstatements and defending Grant’s stance while noting ongoing political attack and public scorn.
The Secretary of War sent the Senate a roster of United States generals as of January 1 1865 listing 66 Major Generals and 265 Brigadier Generals total 333. It notes 245 in command and 200 Brigadiers, with several officers awaiting orders off duty or under trial. Also includes a lengthy Charleston Courrier portrait of General Lee detailing appearance and character.
A fire at Vandemer &eid pork packing and wholesale grocery in Richmond Indiana destroyed the business this morning at two o clock with an estimated loss of eighty thousand dollars insured for three hundred fifty thousand. The adjoining commission house and wool storage owned by Thomas Woodaut were also burned, losses totaling twelve to fifteen thousand and insurance lapses. The G and C A Railroad office was wiped out with most papers, bringing total losses to about one hundred thousand. A separate report notes a groceryman shot Dr Daily in Lima Ohio during disputes over visits to his store. An interfering sheriff was also involved with a bell or two.
A Treasury Department clerk Mr Barrows was shot on the east stair by Miss Mary Karris of Chicago. Barrows died after being wounded in the cheek and heart. Miss Harris walked away calmly and was later detained by a door keeper before police took her away. Rumors swirl about motives and prior promises of marriage.
