Scientists report a vaccine protecting infants as young as three months from group A meningococcal meningitis. NIAID notes U S trials in Finland with the vaccine show strong protection for a high risk age group, potentially reducing outbreak risk nationwide.
New York AP reports a five year study of 574 men and 158 women with bladder cancer finds smoking accounts for about half the cases in men and one third in women. Risk rises with cigarettes smoked and declines after quitting, while artificial sweeteners show no significant difference. Industrial chemicals may explain about 18 percent of cases in men. alcohol shows no link.
Speaker Thomas P. O Neill endorsed a proposal to televise House sessions starting as early as January. Rep. Jack Brooks said cameras would be controlled by House staff and would focus on proceedings, with limited network access and no showing of sleeping or silly moments.
The U S House authorized the Assassinations Committee to seek immunity from prosecution for possibly 150 witnesses in the Kennedy and King investigations. Chairman Louis Stokes said more than 100 witnesses in the Kennedy case may need immunity, including gangsters and soldiers of fortune. He noted the committee could use court immunity to obtain testimony.
