Cyclamate reimbursement bill sparks consumer backlash

Washington hearings on a bill to reimburse chemical firms, bottlers and canners for losses after cyclamate bans drew opposition from Ruth Desmond, Anita Johnson, and Robert Choate. Advocates warned of creating a precedent to fund profits with tax money, while supporters cite administration backing. The proposal would let the Court of Claims decide claims, with gaps for large sums only via Congress approval.

White House backs consumer protection agency plan

The White House backed legislation to create an independent federal agency to advocate for consumers. Virginia Knauer said the proposal is balanced and would give consumers a strong voice, while Ralph Nader labeled the measure weakened than earlier drafts and noted administration opposition had shifted. The bill would grant the new agency authority to intervene with regulators, conduct product safety tests, compile surveys and publish reports on product safety and performance.
