St. Marys UCLA medical unit forms formal affiliation
St. Marys Hospital of Long Beach is formally affiliated with the UCLA school of medicine in medicine and pediatrics. Sister Mary Wilfred announced the affiliation, noting it grows from a shared residency program with Harbor General Hospital Torrance. Ronald Swerdhoff has directed the residency at St Marys since 1965. The move aims to recruit more interns and residents, enhance patient care, and allow Harbor General and UCLA staff doctors to teach at St Marys, improving medical education programs.

The clinic has served 350 clients since opening Nov 1, staffed by 35 advanced trainees and nine staff. Fees are based on ability to pay, with some sessions observed by students via one way glass or CCTV. About 20 Black and Chicana trainees will operate satellite outposts in minority communities including Long Beach, with rap sessions planned at local high schools and junior highs.
