The Boeing 747, the world’s biggest and fastest commercial jetliner, is prepared for public unveiling in Everett Washington. It features a six story tail, 10 abreast seating, a first flight planned for December 17, and capacity up to 490 passengers with a 710000 pound fully loaded weight.
In Chicago the 49th Ward Citizens for Independent Action sought to plant an oak sapling in a small park but police halted the effort. The group’s leader was arrested when he began digging and the sapling was taken by authorities. Police said only the city may plant trees in the area. The planned tree was to be placed in a fork named for Joyce Kilmer.
Italian police raided the Communist Party headquarters in Giugliano near Naples at dawn Saturday and arrested 15 people on gambling charges. The operation targeted alleged organized betting activity linked to the political group.
A private twin engine Cessna 310 with one engine failed flew under the Golden Gate Bridge Saturday escorted by a Coast Guard helicopter. Pilot John Lear 25 of Pacific Palisades had departed Oakland for Honolulu when trouble forced a return. Bridge traffic halted briefly while the craft skirted 75 feet above water 232 feet beneath the span.
