Chronic cathartic users, usually elderly women, may present with symptoms like chronic ulcerative colitis. Dr. Arthur Schwabe of UCLA Medical School warns many are "elderly ladies with diarrhea" whose x rays mislead diagnosis. He cites daily long term use of strong cathartics, especially cascara, as a key factor.
Dr Schwabe spoke on true assortive colitis a colon disease with possible hereditary links and multi system involvement. He noted no universal treatment, the need for patient specific plans, and that Azulfidine may aid inflammation though not as an antibacterial.
