Ford names Californian Weyand Army chief of staff

President Ford named General Frederick C Weyand of California as Army chief of staff to succeed the late Creighton Abrams. Weyand, 58, will be the 34th chief and the first since the Civil War era not to graduate from the U S Military Academy.
