Medical Progress At Symposium On Advances In Medicine
Six leading North American medical scientists spoke to over 400 physicians at a symposium in Disneyland Hotel about future medical progress. They discussed routine use of omega implants, artificial lungs for premature babies, and the treatment of many genetic diseases. Dr Edward Teall Thomas of Toronto predicted computer aided diagnosis will enter medicine within a decade and called the computer an extension of mathematical reasoning that provides probability data to aid diagnosis. He noted artificial lung research uses silicone rubber membranes that spare blood cells. Dr Thomas warned road safety and automobile design need better data use from aviation research. Dr Victor A McKusick of Johns Hopkins and Dr Philadelphia, Temple University, argued hereditary diseases can be treated and that medical progress also creates new diseases with treatments in sight. They urged doctors to inform patients about potential side effects without inducing undue anxiety and cautioned careful language to avoid emotional misreads of illness.
