President Ford and Jimmy Carter met in a televised Philadelphia debate marked by a calm tone and sharp economic jabs. Ford attacked Carter’s spending and bureaucratic promises while Carter accused Ford of mismanagement and weak leadership, with a 90 million viewer audience. A sound outage paused the broadcast for about 10 minutes as both men stood behind lecterns, and both sides claimed victory.

Gerald Gene Reid a 29 year old citizen band radio hobbyist was killed when his antenna fell across power lines in the rear yard of a relative’s Norwalk home. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Studebaker Hospital in Norwalk after an eight o’clock accident officials said.
