Tulare County Sheriff Robert Wiley criticized the State Agricultural Labor Relations Board for bypassing trespass law by letting union organizers onto farms. The ALRB says access is in force and will be enforced. unions seek court injunctions against growers who deny access. UFW and Teamsters elections show UFW leading 57 of 8,500 workers, Teamsters 62 elections for 8,200 workers. Access has driven controversy since the August 28 law took effect.
The ALRB allowed organizers on field during lunch hours and before and after work, while growers blocked enforcement with restraining orders. The California Supreme Court stayed those orders last week, and several UFW and Teamsters organizers were booked in Fresno County for trespassing. Wiley said officers will treat all sides equally and arrest growers if they enter union property without consent.
In California a new collective bargaining law prompts a high stake fight between major teachers unions the CTA and CFT. The bill gives districts exclusive negotiating rights and dues collection power, with votes expected in hundreds of districts next April.
Short news item from Long Beach California dated Wednesday September 24 1975 covers brief local developments and notices in the Independent AM edition.
In a contentious debate the CFT and teachers oppose any union while citing limited rights under a new law. They claim the measure reduces strikes by directing unfair labor practice complaints to a state board, urging accountability that the law allegedly fails to provide.
