The Senate defeated a rider to exempt farm price supports and Medicaid from the 6 billion dollar federal spending reduction for the current fiscal year. President Johnson warned exemptions would require 7.2 billion in cuts. The measure, sponsored by Sparkman Long and Ellen der, failed 37 to 23 with all Republicans voting against it. The proposal would also exempt seven agencies from the cutback including HUD, IRS, SSA, the Tax Court, and others.
