Unseasonal showers ushered in the fall season in the Long Beach area Tuesday. Only a trace of rain fell downtown, with scattered showers continuing late night. Temperatures topped at 69 in some suburbs and 72 in Long Beach as a weather front shifted south into Arizona. Skies were to remain partly cloudy with a high near 72 today.
Los Angeles AP report says Mickey Hargitay told a court he and wife Jayne Mansfield sleep on the floor of their $76,500 home. He reveals monthly earnings of 501 dollars as his wife’s personal manager, dwindling cash since last January, and debts including 40 thousand on their home and 3 thousand on his Cadillac. He proposes modest child support for Tina, not wanting a $415 monthly increase.
Across the Nation reports Tanya Glick, 48, claiming to be John McPartland’s first wife, says there may be four McPartland wives. McPartland died in Monterey nine days ago. his estate battles reveal seven children by at least three wives and poverty for Glick in a sparse apartment overlooking a back alley.
Federal Judge Harry C. Westover postponed the linkage hearing to January 12 on the governments bid for a temporary injunction to end subsidence in the Wilmington oil field. The Oct. 6 date was reset as attorneys for about 40 oil producers, California, and Long Beach argued motions to dismiss by Oct. 20.
Skeleton found in lava beds 40 miles northeast of El Centro identified as Private William P. Kisner, 34, of Offerle Kansas. Kisner died while lost on maneuvers in 1943 and was declared legally dead in 1949. Identified by teeth after discovery in June. Eisner's platoon became lost July 25, 1943. others escaped.
Elmer Robinson former San Francisco mayor and lifelong Republican adds fuel to political fires by declaring he is terribly disgusted by Senator William Knowland. The note appears on Page A-5 and A-T, with the diagnosis aided by electronic equipment.
Deputy Sheriff Harold A. Reiss, 29, and Deputy Lee H. Kerr, 35, were hit when their patrol car was rear ended by a car driven by Frank LaVerne Williams, 43, of Rose Avenue Long Beach. Williams, badly hurt, was booked for manslaughter as investigators noted he initially pretended to be a Long Beach police officer. Williams and Kerr were in critical condition. Reiss died. The accident occurred around 4 p.m. on the San Gabriel Parkway near Springland Street as the officers, responding Code 2 to a scene, turned onto the parkway. Reiss, with Norwalk Sheriff's Station since 1956, was survived by a wife and child. Kerr, also with Norwalk, had since 1953 and left a wife and child.
George Weeks reports a county registration error marred a Long Beach annexation vote held Sept. 16. Fifteen voters living outside the city were mislisted as residents, denying them ballots and triggering debates over liability. Officials debated retrial and potential legality, while the city proceeded with limited actions amid controversy.
Washington UPI Democratic Nations Chairman Paul M. Butler argued that Republican political expediency forced Sherman Adams to resign as Eisenhower's chief of staff rather than a Democratic plot. He said Adams could not blame Democrats publicly to avoid implying a Democratic attack. Butler delivered the party reply to Adams radio TV charge of vilification.
Nationalist forces claimed victory after engaging Communist jets over the Quemoy arc. The Defense Ministry reported four MIGs were shot down and several Reds were driven off in a furious aerial duel while the Nationalists returned to base.
Wanda Purviance, 37, reports a tall dark intruder damaged her Lakewood Boulevard apartment on Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. Tables overturned, lamps and furniture disrupted, drawers opened. nothing stolen. Her son Craig, 20, saw the intruder but police were not alerted. A similar incident occurred earlier in an adjoining unit.
