Religious leaders condemn Dirksen attack on council
Leaders of twelve major denominations protested to Senate Leader Everett Dirksen over his Congressional Record attack on the National Council of Churches. They called the charges erroneous and discredited and warned the move attacks the councils’ 30 denominations and oversees bodies. The telegram named concerns about Council stance on Medicare and Vietnam and critiqued the use of a St Mark's vestry document and Human Events newsletter. The signers include bishops and church executives from Episcopal, Greek Orthodox, United Church of Christ, Methodist, Presbyterian, Church of the Brethren, Lutheran, Reformed, and Baptist groups.
