Senate watchdogs warn of censoring college plays
A California Senate special committee warned the Legislature could censor college productions like The Beard if obscene material continues on campuses. The five member panel published a 200 page report with excerpts from The Beard and The Dutchman, plus photos from a Fullerton campus production. The report notes administrators and professors avoided responsibility while urging colleges to self regulate, and was released to inform the public. Senator James E. Whetmore said 1500 copies were printed at state expense. Senate President Pro Tem Hugh Burns said the report should wake the public to ongoing campus issues.
