Costs Rise on Two Experimental Navy High Speed Ships
Rep. Les Aspin said costs for two experimental air cushion riding Navy ships have risen by at least 69 million dollars due to overruns and inflation. He cited repeated engine failures and electrical hydraulic propulsion defects in the prototypes built by Avrojet in Washington and Bell Industries in Louisiana. The Navy spent 500 million to arm the ships, which test the concept of fast, cushion-assisted heavy vessels. The program plans further testing of 2,200 ton ships.

Pan Am wins $24 million in Arab jet blast
