White girl in Negro school shows integration through new eyes
Virgilia Cook, 14, of Long Beach, was the only white student at Centennial Secondary School in Mattru Jong, Sierra Leone, living with 27,000 square miles of British West Africa. She says classmates welcomed her as a mascot, and the experience underscored racial tensions back home as she returned to California after a year teaching abroad with the United Brethren Church. She and her family followed U.S. racial upheavals with anger and sadness, writing to friends in Africa about Little Rock and segregation.
