Alaska natives face land and cash settlement proposal
Senate Interior Committee backed a plan to pay about 55,000 Alaska natives up to 1 billion dollars and grant up to 40 million acres of land. Two options favored land ownership with mineral rights or land blocks with选 native commission allocation, plus a 500 million cash share now and another 500 million from mineral revenues. The bill aims to settle long-standing claims, though groups want 60 million acres and perpetual mineral revenue. Walter J. Hickel recalls feeling tall after Nixon fired him as interior secretary, in Who Owns America, criticizing Agnew and Goodell oversight remarks.
