Brown’s 1975 Legislative Wins Mark Brown’s Busier Year
In 1975 Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. saw broad Democratic success in California, with lawmakers endorsing most of his agenda. They blocked new state taxes, passed a farm labor bill, curtailed oil depletion allowances, and funded earthquake safety. A notable defeat came on collective bargaining for public employees, while marijuana decriminalization and housing incentives moved forward. Brown’s tax-reform push eroded special privileges for some industries and spurred debate over future school and insurance issues.
