Top secret cargo from Russia lands in Havana harbor
Cuban stevedores unloaded a top secret cargo alleged to include tanks and heavy artillery from the Soviet freighter Hya Mechnikov, which arrived from Odessa. The ship was drydock in Casablanca near Havana as armed boats sealed the area and residents were advised to evacuate or stay away for a week. Only Communist party members were hired for the unloading and worked around the clock with meals brought to them.
