Record grain forecast off but more Soviet sales seen
The Crop Reporting Board lowered the 1975 corn harvest forecast to 5.687 billion bushels, 3 percent below August but 22 percent above last year, with wheat at a record 2.136 billion. Assistant Secretary Bell said the corn decline does not change the view that further grain can be sold to the USSR, though he did not specify amounts. President Ford ordered no new sales before mid October to allow maritime talks and a potential long term deal. Dawson Ahalt said the forecast drop does not alter expectations for about 9 percent higher 1975 average food prices.
