California Senate Rejects Boost for Blind Aged Help
Senate Republicans rejected a 107.7 million bill to raise welfare grants for the blind, aged, and disabled despite support from Democrats. If enacted, the plan would lift monthly grants to 255 for blind individuals and 235 for aged and disabled recipients, with costs cited at 170 million next year and 413 million in three years. The measure, backed by Assemblyman John Burton, faced a Reagan administration veto risk as talks stalled and a conference report was signed by Republicans Mobley and Chappie along with Burton Moscone Beilenson. The Assembly planned to debate the bill next.
