NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE closed in slow trading as the Dow Jones average opened at 899.4, rose briefly, then finished at 891.33 down 7.30. Volume reached 11.62 million shares with 936 declines to 574 advances, 1,770 issues traded, and the market waiting for clearer news while aiming to return to the prior 240 level.
Over the counter stocks in drugs and pharmaceuticals showed sharp losses with Upjohn down 44 to 75, American Hospital 144 to 42, Sears Roebuck 2% to 95, Burroughs 2% to 218, Getty Oil 3% to 122, and J.P. Morgan 3% to 65. Albertson's rose 1 to 1h after a 12.5 cent dividend boost. The Amex market value index fell to 101.32 as declines outpaced advances 381 to 237 with volume at 1.92 million shares.
