Miners return to work defying pickets in West Virginia
In a break from a five year pattern, West Virginia coal miners largely resumed work while some confrontations with pickets occurred in southern coalfields. The wildcat strike extended to several states, with up to 80,000 miners off the job at one point. A federal judge jailed two dissident leaders for violating a restraining order.
