Compromise sought as nationwide phone strike looms
Washington reports a split high stakes bill fight over wage and interest ceilings amid a looming nationwide telephone strike. A Patman backed plan seeks a 3.2 percent wage ceiling and upper limits on bank and system interest, while administration and House factions push different routes to avert higher costs. The fragile talks between CWA and Bell Telephone stalled then progressed toward a compromise with a near term vote expected as Congress weighs noninflationary rate caps and regulatory actions.
