James Loomis a 26 year old former Long Beach State math instructor and his wife Diana rowed a 15 foot skiff from Santa Catalina Island to Long Beach in five and a half hours aiming to revive channel rowing. They paused near the Reef Restaurant at 3 30 pm after encountering calm water and a school of small whales. Loomis noted Diana did more than half the rowing while his wife, a former drama major, led in preparations as they plan to move from Catalina to Redondo Beach with their baby son. The couple worries over who will tow their houseboat across the channel since it is too large to row.
