A Washington State University nutritionist says cattle and sheep could subsist on cooked wood and paper as a carbohydrate source, though they digest wood about 14 percent slower than grain. He notes wood feed costs far lower, with firms selling wood-based feed around 45 dollars a ton in the Northwest and Canada.
Hawaii faces a macadamia nut shortage with no relief until October. Drought delays harvest which normally begins in July but started in September, and last year’s crop is sold out. A nut industry executive says the supply cannot be forced and that nuts must fall as they ripen.
