East Germans mount border crossing amid plant strike
Two East German truck drivers, Willy Geidel and Karl Heinz Warmus, claim workers at the Chemie Halle refinery in Luetzkendorf walked out on Aug 33, the anniversary of the Berlin wall. They drove 100 miles through East Germany, breached border defenses, swam a canal, and fled to the West as East German guards fired. Geidel cited workers drinking to cope with the regime, saying the motto among many is unless you drink you can't stand the regime.
