Pirate-turned-surrender rattle on Eastern Airlines jet
A 20 year old Providence man held an Eastern Airlines jet pilot hostage for nearly four hours. He slashed the pilot Captain Lewis E Whittaker Jr’s face with a razor and struck him with a nail and an axe handle. The FBI agent via two way radio persuaded him to surrender. Initial demand was 100000 and transport to Africa. The incident occurred as authorities plan a bicentennial celebration in Philadelphia and a meeting of the original state governors.
