Breakers Batter Newport and Long Beach Coast
Ferocious 12 foot breakers and a six foot high tide battered the Southland coast from Newport to Cabrillo Beach. The Army Corps of Engineers hauled rock and sand to Newport between 41st and 46th streets to prevent property damage as tides swell. Police closed Ocean Boulevard sections in Long Beach after seawater overflowed curbs and debris clogged storm drains. Lifeguards report the surf the worst in years with heavier action forecast. About 780 people were rescued from riptides along beaches from Zuma to Laguna, as a submerged heart attack death was reported in Huntington Beach. Newport searched for a missing swimmer and a Fullerton youth was identified as a separate casualty. The report continues on Page A-3.
