The family of Air Force Capt. James White, missing since November 27, 1969, found a glimmer of hope after watching a North Vietnamese film. His wife Sharon thought one fleeting man on screen resembled him, though not clearly. She remains hopeful but cautious.
Sweeney returned to the United States from Vietnam and said he was listed as killed in action to avoid desertion. He described being saved by two Viet Cong in the jungle after malaria and harsh jungle conditions. He will remain at the U S Naval Hospital in Albany New York for now.
An 8 year old girl from Rippey, Amy Kelley, goes directly to Governor Robert Ray after seven years of wait for a promised award. Governor plans to attend the Rippey centennial celebration as the award is finally issued. A separate note cites Ralph Nader urging legal safeguards against privacy invasion by computers and banks.
The US Command announced the disbanding of about 10,000 troops in South Vietnam. The 199th Light Infantry Brigade and the Third Brigade of the 7th Infantry Division began standdown as part of a major troop cutback in the Saigon to Cambodian border area.
Enter international force reductions place 992,300 American troops in South Vietnam with 8,000 to pull out to hit Nixon's fourth phase target of 384,400. The two brigades defended Saigon in 1968 Tet and joined Cambodia offensives in May and June as redeployments begin.
14000 firefighters battled wildfires in five states amid a record outbreak. In Wenatchee National Forest Washington 180 square miles burned and pine stands abandoned. In Entlat National Forest 21 mountain homes destroyed. Fires also in Groton California Idaho and Montana. Fire crews described Wenatchee as most critical.
In JERUSALEM the Israeli government postponed further moves to advance peace talks with the Arab states until all Egyptian missile sites near the Suez Canal are removed. The cabinet backed Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, awaiting a U S rejection of Israeli charges of cease fire violations by the United Arab Republic.
