Sadat seeks early resumption of Mideast talks at UN
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat asked the United Nations General Assembly to restart the Mideast peace conference soon with the involvement of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Israel rejected meeting with the PLO, calling it unacceptable. New York officials offered no formal welcome, though Waldheim and many third world diplomats welcomed Sadat amid debates on whether Zionism constitutes racism.

United Nations approves rival Korea resolutions in split votes
The General Assembly committee backed two opposing Korea resolutions. One urged resuming stalled talks and preserving U.N. peace duties, while the other called for withdrawal of foreign forces from South Korea and dissolution of the U.N. command. Strong reactions followed from North Korea and Western states. The vote highlighted deep division and a mockery of consensus within the world body.
